Building a Dream from a Nightmare
Special to The Morning Oracle
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – It was a brisk spring day similar to many others. The fresh scent of new leaves emerging from the many trees filled the air. Birds were starting to nest, their chirps loud but soothing. There was nothing about this day that hinted it would become one of the most tragic and fateful days in our history.
It has nearly been nearly nine years since the Timmernak Wizarding Academy for Boys fell in a brutal attack lead by the Dark Sorceress Persephone. Hundreds of lives were lost that day. Dozens were injured. The castle was devastated by the attack and left in ruins. The people of Nova Scotia were shaken to their very core. That building remains a crumbling structure, standing as a symbolic grave for all those that died during the onslaught. As time passed, we learned more about the Razing of Timmernak.
Kraven Bloodthorne, a Professor from Avistrum Academy, was implicated as being involved and placed on trial. Despite conclusive and decisive evidence provided by Bloodthorne’s defense attorney, Headmaster Clark Dowling, the evidence was ruled inadmissible due to the use of muggle science. This decision by the present judges of the Wizengamot was the cause of much scrutiny in later years. All three judges were impeached, convicted at a Senate trial, and removed from office for misconduct. One judge in particular from that trial, Alexious Wareson, is now serving time in Alcatraz.
While Bloodthorne was eventually exonerated, he did discover that he was indeed one of the assailants of Timmernak. However, Bloodthorne was not acting under his own accord. He was placed under the Imperius Curse with Simon Drake commanding his every action.
That dark revelation came with yet another reveal of how Timmernak fell, that it wasn’t a random violent act by Persephone but an orchestrated, calculated event by the Dark Lord, Simon Drake.
Taking no consolation in the fact that he was Imperiused, Bloodthorne began a fervent crusade to rebuild the Timmernak School. Following the defeat of Drake in 2012, Professor Bloodthorne submitted his resignation as Divination Professor to Headmaster Dowling. His new devotion was to rebuild Timmernak.
His journey was not to be taken alone. Audrey “Trouble” Deserand, then Herbology Professor of Avistrum and Head of Enigmus House, stood to join him on his endeavor. With the full backing of the faculty and students of Avistrum, Bloodthorne and Deserand embarked on their quest.
It was fortunate that the pair had such remarkable support, for their journey was riddled with obstructions. One of their staunchest opponents was the activist group P.A.L.M. (Parents Against Lawless Magic). P.A.L.M. acted with what can only be called a personal vendetta against Bloodthorne and his efforts. Despite limited early support of the group by the populace, they were still instrumental in lobbying for harsh legislation preventing Timmernak from being rebuilt on its original foundation.
Undaunted, Bloodthorne and Deserand set out to find new ground for Timmernak to set its roots. The duo found what they believed to be the perfect place for a new start: New Orleans, Louisiana. A land well-known for magical ties (as well as Deserand’s own family ties), the piece of land they discovered in the swamps just outside of New Orleans would suit their venture well.
But P.A.L.M. was relentless. They achieved new levels of power and sway after hiring Ms. Seraphia Marks as their spokeswitch. A charismatic leader, Marks had an impressive resume that included holding the positions of Prefect and Head Girl while attending Avistrum Academy. Ironically, she was also part of Colubrae House, once headed by Bloodthorne himself. She went after both him and Deserand ruthlessly, attacking their actions and personal character and was able to effectively derail their rebuilding efforts time and again.
Still, Bloodthorne and Deserand did not waver in their quest. After months of support and letters pouring in from the student body of Avistrum, a Referendum was finally created to place the rebuilding of Timmernak on the ballot this past April. P.A.L.M. was present to oppose the cause, but their potency was missing with the surprise and unexplained withdrawal of support for P.A.L.M. by Ms. Marks. The people turned out in droves to vote and the initiative to rebuild Timmernak passed in a landslide.
Finally, after years of fighting the good fight, Kraven Bloodthorne and Trouble Deserand stood victorious. On October 11, 2015 the official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Timmernak School of Magic took place.
But their victory comes on a somber note.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Miss Deserand reflected on the past. “Today is what we have been working towards for so very long. While there are plenty of smiles here, our happiness does not disregard the past. We will never forget those lives that were lost when Timmernak fell. When it seemed as though our efforts were in vain and that this day would never come, Kraven and I found strength from so many resources. We had our friends, our family at Avistrum and the resolve that we would not fail those who died at Timmernak. This new school will stand as a monument forever reverent to those souls.”
Bloodthorne addressed the crowd with his infamous brevity, conveying his thanks and that “he had work to do.”
Headmaster Clark Dowling of Avistrum Academy was also quoted about the rebuilding of Timmernak.
“Ensuring Timmernak’s success is a responsibility for all of us. Never again will we see such a catastrophic break in communication that contributed to the fallen at the Razing of Timmernak. Avistrum’s assets are Timmernak’s. They will never be alone.”
Funding for the school has flowed in from around the world, but was bolstered significantly when an undisclosed amount was donated at the groundbreaking ceremony by Samuel Dowling, Headmaster Dowling’s father and head of DowlingCorp. Local support for the school is also said to be extraordinary.
A new day is dawning in Timmernak’s history. It has been quite the struggle through destruction and tragedy, but with perseverance, loyalty and resolve, hope begins anew.
Que le bon temps rouler à nouveau Timmernak!
